Before I started my business BeautyandtheBoutique.com I had lots of self-limiting beliefs.
It took me many years to gain the confidence to start what you see today because I simply thought, “I CAN’T”.
I was putting my dreams on hold because of two words: I CAN’T.
Many thoughts would race through my mind:
“I can’t afford to start a business. I can’t take the financial risk. I can’t run a business. I can’t afford to buy products to sell. I can’t do it on my own…”
Some years into my “I CAN’T” mindset. A person (whom I hardly knew) gave me the following advice that changed my life:
“Change your internal voice to: I CAN.”
Initially, I dismissed the advice as being too simplistic; this was the ‘real’ world after-all.
But the person was so firm and confident in their tone, that it burned into my brain. I gradually started training my internal voice from:
“I CAN’T” to “I CAN”.
It was strange, because as soon as I started shifting my way of thinking, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I felt happier, even though the world around me had not changed.
That same month, I started laying the foundations of what you see today on BeautyandtheBoutique.com. Five years on and I’m still endeavouring to use my internal voice in a more positive “I CAN DO” way.
It’s not easy, but, believe me, it works.
Having an “I Can Do It” mindset makes things happen in your life. You go from being a procrastinator to a go-getter.
As soon as you tell yourself “I CAN”, your brain creates neurological pathways to think up all sorts of ways to overcome and solve challenges and problems that stand in your way.
I didn’t have any money to start a business, but my brain began to think creatively as to ways I could start tiny and grow.
I had a miniscule amount of savings, and I used these savings to help me beg beauty brands (that I love) to sell me their products to retail. I then took these beauty products to peoples’ houses and started selling in people’s front rooms and door to door. I did this in the evenings after I had worked my day job, working as a makeup artist and stylist. It took me four years to build my business to what you see today on beautyandtheboutqiue.com.
An ‘I CAN’ mindset makes every day easier. It gives hope, drive and determination.
For me, my daily challenges are still here, but rather than believing “I can’t”, I tell myself “I can” and this helps me cope and makes me solution-orientated.
Start with small situations where you currently say, “I can’t” and turn these into, “I can”.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve failed a hundred times, by starting to think “I can”, you’re defying the negatives.
So instead of entertaining negative thoughts, you’ll begin to take affirmative action and begin to do the things you didn’t believe you could do before.
Once you’ve nailed a few smaller ‘cans’, you’ll more feel confident, and gradually your new way of thinking will get to work on some even bigger and more exciting ‘cans’. Watch yourself grow.
Just like a muscle the more you use this “I CAN” mindset, the stronger and more efficient you will become. Over time with continued flexing of this mindset muscle your life will change for the better.
What’s more, from my experience, I found this way of thinking to help greatly in improving my self-confidence and lowering my stress and anxiety levels.
Try it. I think you’ll reap the benefits too.
I hope I’ve inspired you to give your mindset muscle a flex?
