If you’ve spent the last few years living in your skinny jeans, this year could be the year you try something new!
I’ll share my top tips on how to wear each style, so you can ROCK denim like a fashion blogger!
These are my favourite denim styles out there right now, and I’ll show you inspiration for how each style could work for YOU!
This new denim style is slim-fitting (like skinny jeans) in the upper leg, then flares out at the bottom, like a boot-cut style of jean, and is usually cropped just above the ankle.
I’m LOVING how this style is a figure-flattering combo of a modern, sleek skinny style and retro, Seventies bell-bottom style, PLUS…
…it’s super flattering on all body types!
This style is a fail-safe denim style that flatters curvy shapes and helps creates the look of curves on more athletic figures.
If, like me, you’re a shortie in height, I like to wear with a slight heel to help elongate my legs.
Good news – most tops you already own, both fitted and loose fitting tops look great with this style of denim!
Just be sure your you get the right footwear to work with this ankle length.
In the colder months, I like to wear sheer hosiery so that my ankles can be seen without feeling the cold when teamed with an ankle boot.
In warmer months, this style looks amazing hosiery free with a chunky heeled sandal to add a little height whilst still feeling comfortable!
‘Mom’ jeans (or ‘Mum’ jeans here in the UK!) are a little bit of a throwback to early 90s styles of jeans, and they’ve made a huge comeback with a modern twist!
This style of jean is high-waisted, with a tapered leg which narrows towards the ankle, and is usually cropped at the ankle.
Mom jeans usually have a thicker fabric of denim too, and are high waisted making them a great choice for anyone wishing for a little extra tummy control.
If you feel more confident in a looser style of jean that skims your curves rather than hugging them…
…mom jeans are PERFECT for you!
The high-waisted style of mom jeans beautifully flatters hourglass shapes and really accentuates the waist.
Rolling mom jeans up (just a little) at the hem adds an effortless yet oh-so-stylish vibe, which also helps to balance hips for curvy beauties.
Pairing mom jeans with a semi-tucked in shirt or blouse looks extra chic, as it cinches in the waist and carves out an hourglass shape.
Equally, form-fitting tops like bodysuits or polo necks play up the 90’s vibe and help show off your curves by balancing out the looser fit of the jean.
One of my favourite ways to rock this style is with a plain tee (tucked in just a little at the front in a super casual, effortless way) and with a bright lip and heels for a laid-back, cool vibe!
Boyfriend jeans are a classic, loose, laid-back style that is supposed to look like you’ve borrowed your jeans from your boyfriend!
They have a relaxed, loose fit with a straight leg and are a comfy yet super cool style loved by many in the fashion know 😉
Seek out boyfriend jeans that are made from soft thinner denim (as opposed to a thick, sturdy denim) as softer, thinner denim falls and flows in a more flattering way over curves.
Look for a leg length that stops just above the ankle (or give the hemline a little roll-up) as this will highlight your ankles to give the style a touch of sexy feminity!
Experiment with trying on both light wash and dark wash boyfriend jeans.
The shade variations in this style of jeans can really make a difference to how flattering they will look on your body shape.
Should you wear heels or flats?
Some argue that to counteract the looser fit, you should opt for heels (even if they’re low) to elevate this style of boyish denim to a more sophisticated feminine look.
Others say that you should embrace the slouchy style and follow suit with a pair of brogues, heavy boots or simple sneakers.
I say: yes, you can wear them with heels, flats AND sneakers!
Turn your boyfriend jeans up for a louche vibe and to flash your ankle for a touch of femininity to the look!
A simple tee looks amazing, especially when it’s just tucked in a little at the front in a haphazard way!
If you really want to look super stylish, team your boyfriend jeans with a super feminine top – this ensemble looks super cool!
Try a sexy silk camisole with your boyfriend jeans.
In cooler months, simply add an oversized cardigan over the top!
High-waist flare jeans are the ULTIMATE 70s throwback style that always looks uber chic.
The combo of an ultra high waist and long flare at the bottom is a real leg-lengthener on all body shapes – woo hoo!
This is a statement style of jeans that adds instant style to any outfit – it’s a real head-turner!
Look for a soft denim so that the expanse of fabric falls beautifully by skimming the curves of your thighs.
Seek out high waisted ones that fit nice and snug around the waist to help accentuate this part of your figure in contrast to the wide bell bottom.
This shape helps legs look long and lean – especially when worn with heels! Be sure that you wear them long so the hem just skims the floor (avoid walking near puddles for this very reason!).
My favourite way to wear high-waisted flare jeans is to show off the waist and wear with a slim fitted top such as a polo neck to play up the 70’s vibe or…
…with a cool tee tucked in, and complete this simple look with a slim, vintage-looking belt to highlight and show off the waist even more!
High-waisted flares look so good with chunky wedged sandals – wear the hemline on these jeans long so they just skim the floor. This helps legs look REALLY long!
These secrets should help you find your perfect fit:
No matter what the style, always try on a pair of jeans in at least three different sizes, (your regular size and then a size up and a size down), as the size varies so much depending on the thickness of the denim, the cut of the denim and any elasticity in the denim.
When in doubt, seek out a mid-rise jean.
These will fit just on, or slightly below the belly button.
This rise is most flattering on most body shapes.
Remember, the tightness of the denim will go away relatively quickly so always be sure to keep this mind when you’re trying your jeans on! They’ll feel much looser after just a few wears!
Jeans can be tailored! If they gap a little at the waist or the length is too long, take them to a tailor (make sure they match the original stitching).
The money is well worth it to have them fit perfectly (you’re more likely to enjoy them and wear them longer that way) and you don’t have to waste any more time shopping!
Happy denim shopping!
